In 2012, Avon celebrated 20 years of the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade. The company is the leading corporate supporter globally of the breast cancer cause; through 2013, Avon breast cancer programs in 50 countries had donated more than $815 million to fund life-saving breast cancer research and access to quality care.
The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer and the Avon Walk Around the World for Breast Cancer have been critical fund-raisers. From 2003 to 2013, Avon Walks in the United States raised more than $500 million through the dedication of 192,000-plus participants. More than 2 million people have taken part in the Avon Walk Around the World since the international fund-raising Walks began in 2005.
Check Yourself is a global movement that aims to raise awareness and start conversations about how women and men can take action for their own breast health through screening, detection and treatment. Screening guidelines vary by country and media reports about early detection can sometimes be confusing. This campaign is intended to help people better understand some of the common factors that can influence their personal breast cancer risk and learn what actions they can take starting today to lower that risk.
According to the World Health Organization, breast cancer is responsible for 502,000 deaths per year worldwide. Avon’s efforts to support the cause have enabled more than 18 million women around the globe to receive free mammograms and breast cancer screenings. And the Crusade has educated more than 145 million women about breast cancer. Since 1992, Avon has donated more than $200 million for breast cancer research, most recently, for those focused on primary prevention, the etiology of breast cancer, the role viruses may play in causing breast cancer, and the development of a blood or saliva test for early detection.
